Despite the amazing advances of medical science, many illnesses and infections affecting women seem to have been overlooked.

Health authorites say it is not known how bacterial vaginosis can be prevented.

It occurs in women who have sex but is not considered to be a sexually transmitted infection. The reason why women get infected is not understood.

Several factors have been found to increase the likelihood of getting bacterial vaginosis. These include:

* a recent partner change

* having had many sexual partners

* vaginal douching
